OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of different agitation methods on apical extrusion of 1.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) in an ex vivo model of immature teeth. METHODS: Sixty extracted human inferior incisors were prepared to simulate immature teeth and embedded in an artificial root socket made of silicone impression material. The teeth were then divided into four groups: Conventional needle irrigation (CNI) alone, CNI supplemented with Ultrasonic Irrigant Activation (UIA), EasyClean (EC), or XP-endo Finisher (XPF). Extruded NaOCl was collected, reacted with m-cresol purple, and its absorbance values were measured. The data were statistically analyzed using One-way analysis of variance with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: All groups showed apically extruded irrigating solution, and the mean volumes of extruded NaOCl did not differ significantly between any of the test groups (p⟩0.05). CONCLUSION: The activation of 1.5% NaOCL by UIA, EC, or XPF as supplementary to CNI does not promote greater apical extrusion when compared to CNI alone in simulated immature teeth.

Capsaicin (CAP) is the main compound responsible for the spicy flavor of Capsicum plants. However, its application can be inhibited due to its pungency and toxicity. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the cytotoxic effect of CAP and its analogs N-benzylbutanamide (AN1), N-(3-methoxybenzyl) butanamide (AN2), N-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl) butanamide (AN3), N-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl) hexanamide (AN4) and N-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl) tetradecanamide (AN5) on the hepatoma cells of Rattus norvegicus using the MTT test. The results showed cytotoxicity of CAP at concentrations of 100, 150, 175, and 200 µM (24 hours), AN1 at 150 and 175 µM (48 hours), AN2 at 50 µM (24 hours) and 10, 25, 50, and 75 µM (48 hours), AN4 at 175 µM (24 hours), and AN5 at 50 µM (48 hours). Removing the hydroxyl radical from the vanillyl group of capsaicin, together with reducing the acyl chain to 3 carbons, which is the case of AN2, resulted in the best biological activity. Increasing the carbon chain in the acyl group of the capsaicin molecule, which is the case of AN5, also showed evident cytotoxic effects. The present study proves that the chemical modifications of capsaicin changed its biological activity.

Constraint-based, genome-scale metabolic models are an essential tool to guide metabolic engineering. However, they lack the detail and time dimension that kinetic models with enzyme dynamics offer. Model reduction can be used to bridge the gap between the two methods and allow for the integration of kinetic models into the Design-Built-Test-Learn cycle. Here we show that these reduced size models can be representative of the dynamics of the original model and demonstrate the automated generation and parameterisation of such models. Using these minimal models of metabolism could allow for further exploration of dynamic responses in metabolic networks.

Herbivory is one of the major biotic stress factors that affect the establishment of plants. However, the main factors that drive herbivory in seedlings of Amazonian tree species are still not well understood. Here we investigated whether contrasting levels of irradiance influence herbivory according to different herbivory indicators and which leaf traits are most related to interspecific variation in herbivory under contrasting irradiance conditions. We measured the leaf area lost as a result of insect herbivory in five tree species planted in a silvicultural system of secondary forest enrichment according to two indicators, herbivore damage (accumulated since plant germination) and herbivory rate (measured over time), and two irradiance conditions, understorey PPFD 2.6 mol·m-2 ·day-1 ) and gap PPFD 33.1 mol·m-2 ·day-1 . Furthermore, we related the interspecific variation in herbivory to a set of leaf traits: SLA, RWC, sclerophylly, phenolic compound content, tannins, condensed tannins and non-structural carbohydrates. Herbivore damage was significantly affected by light availability and species, with the highest percentage variation observed in the Meliaceae (Carapa guianensis and Swietenia macrophylla). For the herbivory rate, only the interspecific variation was significant, with Bertholletia excelsa having the lowest rates. Chemical characteristics (phenolic compounds and tannins) were most related to herbivory rates, as well as highly influenced by light conditions. Non-structural carbohydrates (starch and sucrose) were also related to the interspecific variation in herbivory. The phenolic compounds and starch, as affected by light quantity, are species dependent. Thus, the selective pressure on herbivores may be driven by species-dependent responses to light conditions.

BACKGROUND: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is prepared using purified human plasma. IVIG therapy has immunomodulatory effects on autoimmune diseases, including severe systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, reports of its effects on large cohorts are scarce. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included SLE patients treated with at least one IVIG cycle for SLE complications. Demographic data, indications, cycle numbers, and clinical improvement with IVIG were evaluated. SLE Disease Activity Index 2000 (SLEDAI-2K) scores were calculated at admission and after IVIG treatment in order to measure clinical improvement. RESULTS: Sixty-three SLE patients treated with IVIG (median age: 29 years; interquartile range 21-36 years; 84.13% female) were included, who received 2 g/kg IVIG for two to five days. Main indications were immune thrombocytopenia, hypogammaglobulinemia, infection during a SLE flare, bicytopenia, and immune hemolytic anemia. Seven patients received more than one IVIG cycle without severe adverse effects. Significant differences were found in SLEDAI-2K scores when the indications were immune thrombocytopenia and hypogammaglobulinemia, with a trend for hemolytic anemia. Patients with concomitant infection, myopathy, and gastrointestinal involvement showed a considerable reduction in their last SLEDAI-2K scores. Fourteen patients died during hospitalization, mainly due to septic shock and active SLE. CONCLUSIONS: IVIG showed adequate tolerance and effectiveness in selected severe SLE manifestations, mainly hematological involvement. It was useful for concomitant infection.

BACKGROUND: The INFECT project aims to advance our understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms in necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs). The INFECT observational study is part of the INFECT project with the aim of studying the clinical profile of patients with NSTIs and correlating these to patient-important outcomes. With this protocol and statistical analysis plan we describe the methods used to obtain data and the details of the planned analyses. METHODS: The INFECT study is a multicentre, prospective observational cohort study. Patients with NSTIs are enrolled in five Scandinavian hospitals, which are all referral centres for NSTIs. The primary outcomes are the descriptive variables of the patients. Secondary outcomes include identification of factors associated with 90-day mortality and amputation; associations between affected body part, maximum skin defect and Laboratory Risk Indicator for Necrotizing Fasciitis (LRINEC) score and 90-day mortality; 90-day mortality in patients with and without acute kidney injury (AKI) and LRINEC score of six and above or below six; and association between affected body part at arrival and microbiological findings. Exploratory outcomes include univariate analyses of baseline characteristics associations with 90-day mortality. The statistical analyses will be conducted in accordance with the predefined statistical analysis plan. CONCLUSION: Necrotizing soft tissue infections result in severe morbidity and mortality. The INFECT study will be the largest prospective study in patients with NSTIs to date and will provide important data for clinicians, researchers and policy makers on the characteristics and outcomes of these patients.

Surfactants are amphipathic compounds containing both hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups, capable to lower the surface or interfacial tension. Considering the advantages of the use of biosurfactants produced by microorganisms, the aim of this paper was to develop and characterize a biosurfactant produced by Streptomyces sp. DPUA1559 isolated from lichens of the Amazon region. The microorganism was cultured in a mineral medium containing 1% residual frying soybean oil as the carbon source. The kinetics of biosurfactant production was accompanied by reducing the surface tension of the culture medium from 60 to values around 27.14 mN/m, and by the emulsification index, which showed the efficiency of the biosurfactant as an emulsifier of hydrophobic compounds. The yield of the isolated biosurfactant was 1.74 g/L, in addition to the excellent capability of reducing the surface tension (25.34 mN/m), as observed from the central composite rotational design when the biosurfactant was produced at pH 8.5 at 28°C. The critical micelle concentration of the biosurfactant was determined as 0.01 g/mL. The biosurfactant showed thermal and pH stability regarding the surface tension reduction, and tolerance under high salt concentrations. The isolated biosurfactant showed no toxicity to the micro-crustacean Artemia salina, and to the seeds of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.). The biochemistry characterization of the biosurfactant showed a single protein band, an acid character and a molecular weight around 14.3 kDa, suggesting its glycoproteic nature. The results are promising for the industrial application of this new biosurfactant.

The microalgae Tetradesmus obliquus is able to maintain a high photosynthetic efficiency under nitrogen limitation and is considered a promising green microalgae for sustainable production of diverse compounds, including biofuels. Here, we report the first draft whole-genome shotgun sequencing of T. obliquus The final assembly comprises 108,715,903 bp with over 1,368 scaffolds.

BACKGROUND: The development of biological processes that replace the existing petrochemical-based industry is one of the biggest challenges in biotechnology. Aspergillus niger is one of the main industrial producers of lignocellulolytic enzymes, which are used in the conversion of lignocellulosic feedstocks into fermentable sugars. Both the hydrolytic enzymes responsible for lignocellulose depolymerisation and the molecular mechanisms controlling their expression have been well described, but little is known about the transport systems for sugar uptake in A. niger. Understanding the transportome of A. niger is essential to achieve further improvements at strain and process design level. Therefore, this study aims to identify and classify A. niger sugar transporters, using newly developed tools for in silico and in vivo analysis of its membrane-associated proteome. RESULTS: In the present research work, a hidden Markov model (HMM), that shows a good performance in the identification and segmentation of functionally validated glucose transporters, was constructed. The model (HMMgluT) was used to analyse the A. niger membrane-associated proteome response to high and low glucose concentrations at a low pH. By combining the abundance patterns of the proteins found in the A. niger plasmalemma proteome with their HMMgluT scores, two new putative high-affinity glucose transporters, denoted MstG and MstH, were identified. MstG and MstH were functionally validated and biochemically characterised by heterologous expression in a S. cerevisiae glucose transport null mutant. They were shown to be a high-affinity glucose transporter (K m = 0.5 ± 0.04 mM) and a very high-affinity glucose transporter (K m = 0.06 ± 0.005 mM), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study, focusing for the first time on the membrane-associated proteome of the industrially relevant organism A. niger, shows the global response of the transportome to the availability of different glucose concentrations. Analysis of the A. niger transportome with the newly developed HMMgluT showed to be an efficient approach for the identification and classification of new glucose transporters.

Compounds extracted from plants can provide an alternative approach to new therapies. They present characteristics such as high chemical diversity, lower cost of production and milder or inexistent side effects compared with conventional treatment. The Brazilian flora represents a vast, largely untapped, resource of potential antiviral compounds. In this study, we investigate the antiviral effects of a panel of natural compounds isolated from Brazilian plants species on hepatitis C virus (HCV) genome replication. To do this we used firefly luciferase-based HCV sub-genomic replicons of genotypes 2a (JFH-1), 1b and 3a and the compounds were assessed for their effects on both HCV replication and cellular toxicity. Initial screening of compounds was performed using the maximum non-toxic concentration and 4 compounds that exhibited a useful therapeutic index (favourable ratio of cytotoxicity to antiviral potency) were selected for extra analysis. The compounds APS (EC50=2.3µM), a natural alkaloid isolated from Maytrenus ilicifolia, and the lignans 3(∗)43 (EC50=4.0µM), 3(∗)20 (EC50=8.2µM) and 5(∗)362 (EC50=38.9µM) from Peperomia blanda dramatically inhibited HCV replication as judged by reductions in luciferase activity and HCV protein expression in both the subgenomic and infectious systems. We further show that these compounds are active against a daclatasvir resistance mutant subgenomic replicon. Consistent with inhibition of genome replication, production of infectious JFH-1 virus was significantly reduced by all 4 compounds. These data are the first description of Brazilian natural compounds possessing anti-HCV activity and further analyses are being performed in order to investigate the mode of action of those compounds.

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo estabelecer in vitro a espécie Lippia alba (Mill.) N. E. Brown e promover a aclimatização de mudas dessa espécie. Para isso, foi testada a influência de diferentes concentrações e tempos de imersão em hipoclorito de sódio na assepsia dos explantes. Segmentos nodais foram imersos em hipoclorito de sódio nas concentrações 0,4; 0,6; 0,8 e 1,0 % e nos tempos 8, 12 e 16 minutos. Após 30 dias avaliou-se a contaminação bacteriana (%), número de brotos, número de folhas, e a taxa de sobrevivência (%). A concentração de 1% de hipoclorito de sódio foi a mais eficiente no controle da contaminação. Ápices caulinares de L. alba foram estabelecidos in vitro em meio MS suplementado com diferentes doses de BAP (0; 0,5; 1,0; 1,5 mg L-1). Após 140 dias avaliou-se a contaminação (%), a taxa de sobrevivência (%), a oxidação (%) e o número de brotos. Os melhores resultados foram obtidos para a dose 1,5 mg L-1 deste regulador. Para a aclimatização foram testados quatro tipos de substratos: pó de coco + calcário (1 g L-1), Plantmax® + calcário (1 g L-1), vermiculita + calcário (1 g L-1) e pó de coco + Plantmax® + vermiculita (1:1:1) + calcário (1 g L-1). Avaliou-se a taxa de sobrevivência (%), comprimento da parte aérea (cm), comprimento da raiz (cm), massa fresca da parte aérea e da raiz (g), e a massa seca da parte aérea e da raiz (g). Os melhores resultados foram obtidos quando com o substrato comercial Plantmax®.


The present study aimed to establish the species Lippia alba (Mill.) N. E. Brown in vitro and promote the acclimatization of the seedlings of this species. Therefore, we tested the effect of different concentrations and immersiog times in sodium hypochloritetfor the disinfection of explants. Nodal segments were immersed in sodium hypochlorite at the different concentrations of ,.4; ,.6; ,.8 and ,.0% during the different times of 8, 12 and 16 minutes. After 30 days, bacterial contamination (%), number of shoots, number of leaves and survival rate (%) were evaluated. The 1% concentration of sodium hypochlorite was more effective in controlling contamination. Shoot apices of L. alba were established in vitro on MS medium supplemented with different concentrations of BAP (;, ,.5; ,.0; ,.5 mg L-1). After 140 days, we evaluated the contamination (%), survival rate (%), oxidation (%) and number of shoots. The best results were obtained when we used the dose of ,.5 mg L-1 of this regulator. For acclimatization, we tested four types of substrates: coconut powder + lime (1 g L-1), Plantmax® + lime (1 g L-1), vermiculite + lime (1 g L-1) and coconut powder + Plantmax® + vermiculite (1:1:1) + lime (1 g L-1). We evaluated the survival rate (%), shoot length (cm), root length (cm), fresh weight of shoot and root (g) and dry weight of shoot and root (g). The best results were obtained when using the substrate Plantmax®.

Pseudomonas putida KT2440-JD1 was derived from P. putida KT2440 after N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (NTG)-mutagenesis and exposure to 3-fluorobenzoate (3-FB). The mutant was no longer able to grow using benzoate as a sole carbon source, but co-metabolized benzoate to cis, cis-muconate during growth on glucose, which accumulated in the growth medium. The specific production rate (q(pm)) was 0.18±0.03 g cis, cis-muconate/(g(DCW) h) in continuous cultures, and increased to 1.4 g cis, cis-muconate/(g(DCW) h) during wash-out cultivation. Transcriptome analysis showed that the cat operon was not induced in P. putida KT2440-JD1 in the presence of 5mM benzoate, due to a point mutation in the highly conserved DNA binding domain of the transcriptional regulator (catR) of the cat operon. The ben operon was highly expressed in the presence of benzoate in the mutant and its parental strain. This operon contains PP_3166 (catA2), which was shown to be a second catechol 1,2-dioxygenase besides catA. P. putida KT2440-JD1 is the first cis, cis-muconate-accumulating mutant that was characterized at the genetic level. The specific production rate achieved is at least eight times higher than those reported for other cis, cis-muconate-producing strains.

A limited life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed on a combined biological and chemical process for the production of adipic acid, which was compared to the traditional petrochemical process. The LCA comprises the biological conversion of the aromatic feedstocks benzoic acid, impure aromatics, toluene, or phenol from lignin to cis, cis-muconic acid, which is subsequently converted to adipic acid through hydrogenation. Apart from the impact of usage of petrochemical and biomass-based feedstocks, the environmental impact of the final concentration of cis, cis-muconic acid in the fermentation broth was studied using 1.85% and 4.26% cis, cis-muconic acid. The LCA focused on the cumulative energy demand (CED), cumulative exergy demand (CExD), and the CO(2) equivalent (CO(2) eq) emission, with CO(2) and N(2) O measured separately. The highest calculated reduction potential of CED and CExD were achieved using phenol, which reduced the CED by 29% and 57% with 1.85% and 4.26% cis, cis-muconic acid, respectively. A decrease in the CO(2) eq emission was especially achieved when the N(2) O emission in the combined biological and chemical process was restricted. At 4.26% cis, cis-muconic acid, the different carbon backbone feedstocks contributed to an optimized reduction of CO(2) eq emissions ranging from 14.0 to 17.4 ton CO(2) eq/ton adipic acid. The bulk of the bioprocessing energy intensity is attributed to the hydrogenation reactor, which has a high environmental impact and a direct relationship with the product concentration in the broth.

Carcass composition and meat quality attributes of 55 suckling kids (27 males and 28 females) and 57 suckling lambs (28 males and 29 females) of Portuguese native breeds were investigated. These suckling kid and lamb meats are European meat quality labels produced according to "Cabrito de Barroso- PGI" and "Borrego Terrincho-PDO" specifications, respectively. Female kids were slaughtered at 9.1 +/- 0.36 kg of BW, and male kids were slaughtered at 10.4 +/- 0.37 kg of BW, corresponding to 20.1 and 17.7% of maturity, respectively. Female lambs were slaughtered at 8.6 +/- 0.53 kg of BW, and male lambs were slaughtered at 9.9 +/- 0.23 kg of BW, corresponding to 19.9 and 17.1% of maturity, respectively. At 24 h postmortem, various yield and quality measurements were collected. The left sides of the carcasses were dissected into muscle, subcutaneous fat, intermuscular fat, and bone. Final pH, instrumental color (L*, a*, b*), carcass measurements, and kidney knob and pelvic fat were also determined. Samples of LM were taken from the lumbar and thoracic cuts for intramuscular and meat quality determinations. At 72 h postmortem, a sample of LM was used for cooking losses and Warner-Bratzler shear force determination. Suckling lambs had greater dressing proportion than suckling kids (P < 0.01). Carcass fatness was not affected by species (P > 0.05), but females had greater kidney knob and pelvic fat proportion than males (P < 0.01). Lambs had greater proportions of the highly valued leg cut and lower proportions of shoulder, anterior rib, and neck cuts than kids. Dissection results indicated that kid carcasses had greater muscle content and lower dissected fat and bone than lambs. Kids had greater (P < 0.001) muscle ultimate pH value than lambs (5.8 +/- 0.02 vs. 5.6 +/- 0.02). Males had greater (P < 0.05) muscle ultimate pH value than females (5.7 +/- 0.02 vs. 5.6 +/- 0.02). The kid meat was significantly lighter (P < 0.05) and less yellow (P < 0.001) than the lamb meat. Kids presented less cooking losses (P < 0.001) than lambs, and shear force value was significantly greater (P < 0.01) in lamb meat. The kid meat had significantly more moisture (P < 0.001) and less intramuscular fat content (P < 0.001) than lambs. At this maturity stage, there were significant differences on both carcass and meat quality attributes of suckling kids and lambs, possibly due to inherent differences between species.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the usefulness of Doppler parameters in the differentiation between the two types of amiodarone-associated thyrotoxicosis (AAT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred thirty-seven individuals were selected at our institution. They were divided into four groups: 84 normal subjects (N), 30 euthyroids taking amiodarone (A), 14 AAT type 1 patients (AAT1), and nine AAT type 2 patients (AAT2). Each AAT type was classified according to (131)I uptake and clinical outcome. Blindly, the resistance and pulsatility indexes (RI, PI), systolic peak velocity, and color pixel density (CPD) were calculated. RESULTS: AAT1 had greater CPD than AAT2 (P = 0.02). The latter group had similar vascularization to the N and A groups (P = 0.45). The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve showed that systolic peak velocity in the inferior thyroid arteries and CPD were the best parameters in the differentiation between AAT type 1 and AAT type 2 (Az = 0.83 and 0.84, respectively). Impedance indexes were useless. CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrate that objective tests such as systolic peak velocities in the thyroid arteries and CPD are reliable parameters for differentiating between the two types of AAT.

The use of Longissimus thoracis et lumborum muscle (LM) volume measured in vivo by real-time ultrasonography (RTU) to estimate carcass composition was evaluated in 47 female sheep. Animals were scanned over six sites (7th, 9th, 11th and 13th thoracic vertebrae and 2nd and 4th lumbar vertebrae). After slaughter carcass weight (CW) and composition by dissection were determined. RTU volume measurements were calculated by multiplying the LM area at each site by the vertebra lengths. Equivalent measurements to those taken in vivo were obtained on the carcass using a digital camera and image analysis. The correlation between LM volume measured by RTU and in the carcass was high for all scans. LM volume was better in predicting carcass muscle than carcass fat. Lower determination coefficients were obtained between LM volume and carcass tissues expressed in % of CW. The best estimates of carcass tissues weights and proportions were obtained using the LM volume between the 2nd and the 4th lumbar vertebrae for all tissues. Multiple regression equations were fitted using live weight (LW) and LM volume to predict carcass composition. For all tissues, the best fit was obtained with two, three or four independent variables and the stepwise procedure was consistent in selecting LW to establish the prediction equations. Weights and proportions of muscle, subcutaneous fat, intermuscular fat and total fat were accurately predicted. These results indicate that Longissimus thoracis et lumborum muscle volume measured in vivo by RTU can be used to predict sheep carcass composition (muscle and fat).

Fifty seven suckling lambs (28 males and 29 females) of the Churra da Terra Quente breed were used to evaluate the effects of live weight and sex on carcass composition and meat quality traits. Lambs were slaughtered at three weight classes (<8kg, 8-11kg and >11kg) according to "Borrego Terrincho-PDO" specifications. The left sides of the carcasses were totally dissected. The longissimus thoracis and lumborum muscle was used for meat quality determination. Dressing proportion and carcass fatness were not affected by weight class or sex. Muscle proportion was similar in all carcass joints for the three weight classes. The percentage of bone decreased at the higher weight class, while that of subcutaneous and intermuscular fat increased. Female lambs had higher muscle proportions and greater muscle/bone ratios in the carcass side than males. Muscle pH, colour, cooking losses and tenderness were not affected by gender and weight class. Female lambs and weight classes 8-11kg and >11kg had higher proportions of intramuscular fat.

Carcass composition and meat quality traits were evaluated in 55 suckling kids (27 males and 28 females) from Serrana (S), Bravia (B) and Serrana×Bravia (S×B) crossbred genotypes. Kids were slaughtered at 8-11kg of live weight according to "Cabrito de Barroso-PGI" specifications and carcasses' left sides were totally dissected. Dressing percentage (based on ELW) did not vary between genotypes and sexes. Genotype B carcasses have better conformation, expressed in higher compactness index and muscle/bone ratio. Sex had no effect on the composition of dissected carcass but females deposited more internal fat than males. S genotype had significantly less muscle content and higher dissectible fat compared to B and S×B genotypes, suggesting differences in maturity stages. The carcass' bone content (20.4-21.4%) did not differ significantly between genotypes. The longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) and gluteobiceps (GB) muscles were used for meat quality determinations. Genotype had a significant effect on meat traits and fatty acid composition of the analysed muscles: B genotype and LTL muscle showed lower final pH, S×B genotype had darker and more red muscles, GB muscle had a higher shear force value and lower collagen solubility. Few sex effects were observed on meat quality traits as well as on fatty acid composition. Average percentage of desirable fatty acids in kids was superior to 60% with male S genotype displaying a lower value. Genotypes B and B×S, males and GB muscle had more favorable PUFA:SFA ratios.

Ultrasonic measurements were taken on 46 sheep using a real-time ultrasound machine equipped with 2 probes (5 and 7.5 MHz). Measurements of subcutaneous fat thickness (SC) and muscle LM depth (MD) and area (MA) were taken at 2 locations: over the 13th thoracic vertebra (SC13, MD13, and MA13, respectively) and at the interval between the third and fourth lumbar vertebrae (SC34, MD34, and MA34, respectively). Fat thickness was also measured over the third sternebra of the sternum. The relationship between carcass and in vivo ultrasound measurements was high for all the measurements (r(2) between 0.54 and 0.96, P < 0.01). Concerning MD and SC, the 7.5 MHz probe estimates were consistently more precise than the 5-MHz estimates (r(2) increased between 0.09 and 0.13), but the reverse occurred with the MA estimates, although to a lesser extent. Estimates of carcass composition for muscle, subcutaneous fat, intermuscular fat, internal fat, and total fat based on BW explained a large amount of variation in muscle (87%), subcutaneous fat (85%), intermuscular fat (79%), internal fat (74%), and total fat (87%). In most cases (55 of 70) the introduction of one ultrasound measurement in addition to BW in the multiple regression equations further improved the explanation of variation for weight of carcass tissues, internal fat, and total fat. For carcass muscle estimation, the ultrasound measurements of muscle provided an increase of r(2) between 0.05 and 0.10 (P < 0.01). The SC13 and SC34 gave the best improvements in estimating subcutaneous fat, intermuscular fat, internal fat, and total fat (r(2) increased between 0.05 and 0.17; P < 0.01). Prediction of the proportions of the carcass components (internal and total fat from BW) was clearly lower than the prediction of the absolute amounts of these traits. Inclusion of one or more ultrasound measurements in addition to BW increased the predictive ability of the equations. Both probes were useful to estimate carcass muscle depth and area and fat depth, but the 7.5-MHz probe showed a greater ability to estimate depth. For all traits, the stepwise procedure demonstrated that the best fit was obtained with BW and one or more ultrasound measurement with the 7.5-MHz probe.
